San Diego International Fringe Festival: Dozens of Acts, Two Weeks, One Ticket Price

If your idea of theater involves a kid dressed as a goblin doing improv, a one-woman hip-hopera about gentrification, or a tap dance routine performed to a live solo cello — the San Diego International Fringe Festival is your kind of event.

Now in its latest edition, the Fringe runs through May 24 at venues across the city, offering more than 50 performances spanning standup comedy, drag, experimental theater, dance, spoken word, and genres that defy easy categorization.

How It Works

The Fringe model is beautifully simple: buy a button (general admission pass), and you can see as many shows as you can fit into your schedule. Individual show tickets are also available for those who want to sample rather than binge. Most performances run 30-60 minutes, making it easy to catch multiple acts in a single evening.

What We’re Excited About

  • “Goblin Improv” — Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Kids and adults in goblin costumes doing improv. Surprisingly delightful.
  • “West of Center” — A hip-hopera exploring displacement and identity in rapidly changing San Diego neighborhoods
  • “Sole/Soul” — Tap dancer and cellist collaborate on a meditation about rhythm and breath
  • Late-night comedy showcases — Multiple comics testing new material in intimate venues

Why Fringe Matters

Fringe festivals are where the next generation of performers takes risks that mainstream venues won’t program. San Diego’s version has become a launching pad for acts that go on to Edinburgh Fringe, Off-Broadway, and touring circuits. It’s also one of the most affordable cultural events in the city — a rarity in a town where a single theater ticket can easily top $80.

Shows run daily through May 24 at venues including Diversionary Theatre, OB Playhouse, and several pop-up spaces. Full schedule at sandiegofringe.org.
