Riverwalk San Diego Construction Advances: 721-Unit Village Nears Concrete Completion

Construction is advancing on Riverwalk San Diego, the massive mixed-use development rising on the former Riverwalk Golf Course site in Mission Valley. The project, which will eventually include 721 residential units, retail space, a full-service grocery store, and a future trolley station, is one of the largest active developments in the city.

What’s Being Built

  • Phase 1: 240 apartment units, 45 townhomes, ground-floor retail, and a central park along the San Diego River
  • Phase 2: Additional 436 apartments, the grocery store, and additional retail and restaurant space
  • Transit: A future Mid-Coast Trolley station is planned adjacent to the development
  • Parks: 95 acres of parks and open space along the river corridor

Timeline

Concrete work on the first residential buildings is nearing completion, with interior build-out expected through late 2026. First residents could begin moving in by early 2027, with full Phase 1 completion expected by mid-2028.

The Bigger Picture

Riverwalk is one of several major Mission Valley projects transforming the area from its car-oriented past into a more walkable, transit-connected district. Combined with the SDSU Mission Valley development (the former Qualcomm Stadium site), Mission Valley is adding thousands of housing units and millions of square feet of commercial space over the next decade.

The projects represent a bet that San Diego’s future lies in dense, mixed-use, transit-oriented development — a shift from the sprawling suburban pattern that defined the region for decades.
