San Diego’s Best New Coffee Shops of 2026: From Hillcrest to National City
San Diego’s specialty coffee scene is having a moment, with a wave of new independent cafés opening across the county — from a Japanese-style kissaten in Hillcrest to a community-focused roastery in National City.
Kura Coffee opened in February in a converted craftsman bungalow on University Avenue, drawing a devoted following for its pour-overs, tamago sandos, and quiet atmosphere. Just a few blocks away, Floré Café debuted with natural wine on tap alongside single-origin espresso and house-baked pastries.
In National City, Collective Root — founded by a pair of longtime baristas from Café Moto — aims to create a gathering space for the community with rotating local art, weekend pop-ups, and weekend cupping classes open to the public. “We want this to feel like a neighborhood living room,” co-founder Lily Nguyen said at its April opening.
